We know there is no shortage of information out there. You can Google the best distilleries, read hundreds of hotel reviews, save a dozen TikToks about “hidden gems,” and ask ChatGPT to build you a four-day itinerary before you’ve even finished your coffee. So why would you need a local?

Google vs. Someone Who Actually Lives Here
Let’s say you’re planning a trip to a city you’ve never visited before. You search “best places to stay in Louisville.” Google will give you a LOT of places to stay.
But now, you have to figure out which area is right for you. Do you want to be able to walk to dinner and grab a cocktail afterward at a nearby speakeasy, or would you rather stay somewhere in the countryside to feel totally off the grid? Are you planning to spend most of your time in Louisville, or are you heading out to Bardstown, Frankfort and Lexington? Is that cute Airbnb in a great location, or does it just look that way on a map?
That’s where local knowledge comes in. We can tell you, “If you want to walk to restaurants and bars, I’d stay here,” or “If you’re planning to spend most of your time doing these activities, I’d look at staying in this area instead.”
And sometimes the most helpful local recommendation is simply, “Honestly? I wouldn’t stay/eat/hang out there.”
Kentucky Geography Is a Little Sneaky
This is another one we see all the time. You pull up a map and think, Oh, those places aren’t that far apart.
Technically, you might be right. But there’s a big difference between “Google Maps says you can drive there” and “this is a good way to spend your time on vacation.”
Louisville, Bardstown, Lexington, Frankfort and the surrounding areas all have their own bourbon experiences, restaurants, and attractions, but they aren’t exactly next door to one another. Once you add tour times, tastings, lunch, traffic, parking and actually getting to enjoy yourself, that ambitious itinerary can start to look a little less appealing.
After planning thousands of bourbon excursions and Kentucky activities, our team has a pretty good feel for what fits together, what doesn’t, and when a map is making something look much easier than it actually is.
Plus, Google Maps never accounts for the fact that on that particular road, it’s inevitable you’ll get stuck behind a tractor and need to add 10 minutes to your drive time. Just to be safe.
The “Best of Kentucky” Might Not Be the Best for You
If you search for the “best things to do in Kentucky,” you’re going to get plenty of answers, and a lot of them are probably great choices. But the better question is, what does your group actually want to do?
A group of four friends coming for a long weekend might want great restaurants, bourbon, cocktails and a little nightlife. A family might be more interested in horses, outdoor activities, local attractions and places that everyone can enjoy. A couple celebrating an anniversary might want a beautiful dinner, a unique experience, and a few places that feel a little more romantic.
Just like with our bourbon tours, we know the Kentucky spots you may not know about or find on a “Best of” list on Google or TripAdvisor. We know the restaurant that’s been around forever but doesn’t have a million reviews. We know about the little cocktail bar you might walk right past. We know the town that’s worth a stop even though it isn’t on every tourist itinerary.
Sometimes the best Kentucky experience for your group isn’t the one ranked #1 online.
Can AI Plan Your Bourbon Trip?
Honestly? Kind of.
AI is pretty impressive. It can give you a list of distilleries, restaurants, hotels and things to do in Kentucky in about 10 seconds. What it can’t do quite as well is tell you how all those pieces will actually work together once you’re here.
It might recommend a great restaurant without realizing it’s 25 minutes in the wrong direction from everything else you’re doing that day. It can find a highly rated hotel, but it doesn’t know whether your group would be happier somewhere walkable and lively or quiet with easy parking. And it certainly can’t know which unexpected experience might become the story your group tells for years to come.

The funny thing about planning a trip is that you don’t always know what you don’t know.
