Because bourbon tastes even better with a view.
There’s just something about summer in Kentucky Bourbon Country.
Maybe it’s the rolling horse farms. Maybe it’s the sound of live music drifting across a patio while someone hands you a perfectly cold cocktail. Maybe it’s the fact that after touring a rickhouse in July, literally any shaded porch feels like heaven.
Whatever it is, some distilleries simply shine in the summer.
From scenic overlooks and garden courtyards to cocktail bars and live music series, here are a few of our favorite Kentucky distillery patios and outdoor spaces worth lingering a little longer at this summer.
Castle & Key Distillery
Central/ Lexington Region
If summer bourbon patios had a beauty contest, Castle & Key would absolutely be in the running.
Originally built in the late 1800s by Colonel E.H. Taylor, the restored property feels more like a botanical garden mixed with a historic estate than a traditional distillery. The grounds are full of walking paths, stone architecture, sunken gardens, and peaceful outdoor seating areas that somehow make you want to sip slowly and stay all afternoon.
Their seasonal cocktails are especially good in warm weather, and this is one of the best places on the trail if your group wants a slower, scenic stop rather than a quick tasting-and-go.
Summer vibe:
- Garden cocktails
- Gorgeous photo spots
- Relaxed outdoor seating
- One of the prettiest grounds in Bourbon Country

Castle & Key Distillery
Wild Turkey Distilling Co.
Central/Lexington Region
If summer bourbon patios had a category for best view, Wild Turkey would be making a very strong case.
Following recent renovations, Wild Turkey’s outdoor spaces and patio have become one of the most scenic spots on the trail. Perched high above the Kentucky River, the views alone are worth lingering for a while — preferably with a cocktail in hand.
This stop feels especially good in the summer. Big Kentucky scenery, fresh air, and one of those backdrops that somehow convinces everyone to take “just one more photo.”
And fun fact: one of our groups recently got engaged on the patio, which honestly feels pretty fitting. Turns out Bourbon Country can be romantic too.
Summer vibe:
- Kentucky River views
- Gorgeous patio and outdoor spaces
- Great photo opportunities
- One of the best scenic overlooks on the trail

Wild Turkey Distillery
Whiskey Thief Distilling Co.
Central/Lexington Region
If your ideal bourbon stop involves frozen cocktails, rolling hill views, live music, and casually spotting farm animals while sipping whiskey… Whiskey Thief is probably your place.
Set on a working farm outside Frankfort, Whiskey Thief has become a favorite summer hangout thanks to its relaxed atmosphere and genuinely gorgeous setting. The outdoor spaces feel more like a laid-back Kentucky gathering spot than a traditional distillery experience, in the best way possible.
One of the coolest parts? Their tastings are pulled straight from the barrel, meaning you sample the whiskey exactly as it’s aging.
But honestly, in the summer, the frozen cocktails might steal the show.
Summer vibe:
- Bourbon slushies and cocktails
- Scenic farm views
- Outdoor seating and live music
- Farm animals and a super relaxed atmosphere
- One of the more unique outdoor experiences on the trail

Whiskey Thief Distilling Co.
Wilderness Trail Distillery
Central/Lexington Region
Wilderness Trail feels a little more laid-back and tucked away than some of the bigger-name stops, which is exactly why a lot of bourbon fans love it.
Their outdoor areas and campus have a relaxed Kentucky feel that works especially well in warmer months, and they’ve built a strong reputation among more serious bourbon enthusiasts over the last several years.
This is the kind of place where you can settle into a pour, have an actual conversation, and not feel rushed.

Wilderness Trail Distilery
James E. Pepper Distillery
Central/ Lexington Region
If your group prefers a more urban bourbon experience, Lexington’s Distillery District is tough to beat in the summer.
James E. Pepper sits in the middle of one of the most walkable bourbon areas in the state, surrounded by restaurants, breweries, bars, coffee shops, and outdoor hangout spots.
This one feels less “rolling horse farm” and more “summer bourbon weekend with friends.”
A great option if you want:
- Patio hopping
- Cocktails over formal tastings
- Live music nearby
- Walkability

James E. Pepper Distillery
Bardstown Bourbon Company
Bardstown Region
If you want modern Bourbon Country energy, this is the spot.
Bardstown Bourbon Company has become known for its sleek campus, elevated food program, and cocktail experience. Their patio and restaurant spaces feel especially lively in the summer, making this a great stop for lunch, drinks, or a longer break between tours.
This is also one of the better places for people in your group who may not be hardcore bourbon drinkers yet. The cocktail program is approachable, creative, and consistently solid.
Summer vibe:
- Modern bourbon campus
- Excellent food and cocktails
- Great group stop
- Feels social and energetic

Bardstown Bourbon Co.
Maker’s Mark Distillery
Bardstown Region
Maker’s Mark somehow manages to feel iconic and peaceful at the same time.
The property is absolutely beautiful in the summer, with creekside areas, walking paths, mature trees, and outdoor spaces that make it easy to slow down between tastings.
And honestly? Watching people dip their own bottle in the famous red wax never really gets old.
If your ideal summer distillery stop includes a cocktail in the shade and a little wandering around afterward, Maker’s is hard to top.
There are a number of others in the region, including Preservation, Limestone Branch, and Jim Beam.

Maker’s Mark Distillery
Rabbit Hole Distillery
Louisville Region
If your bourbon style leans more rooftop cocktails and city views than rocking chairs and horse farms, Rabbit Hole is a must-stop in Louisville.
The modern distillery feels completely different from some of the more traditional Kentucky campuses — in a good way. Think sleek architecture, downtown energy, inventive cocktails, and one of the more contemporary bourbon experiences on the trail.
It’s an especially great summer stop before dinner or a night out in NuLu.
Summer vibe:
- Modern city atmosphere
- Craft cocktails
- Rooftop/city energy
- Great Louisville stop before nightlife
Other Louisville options include Stitzel-Weller and Whiskey Thief NULU.

Bonus: Summer Means More Than Just Great Patios
Summer is when many Kentucky distilleries really start showing off. Along with scenic patios and seasonal cocktails, some distilleries roll out live music, food trucks, special releases, cocktail classes, and other limited-time events on select days and weekends.
A bourbon cocktail with a view is great. Add live music and suddenly you may find yourself staying a little longer than planned.
Schedules vary throughout the season, so if there’s a stop you’re especially excited about, check with your booking coordinator or peek at the distillery’s website and social pages ahead of your trip to see what’s happening during your visit.
A Quick Tip for Summer Bourbon Tours
Kentucky summer heat is no joke — especially after a few tastings.
A few things that make summer tours much more enjoyable:
- pace yourself
- drink way more water than you think you need
- don’t skip lunch
- and leave a little extra time to actually enjoy the patios and grounds
Some of the best moments on the Bourbon Trail happen between the tours anyway.
Usually with a cocktail in hand and nowhere else to be.
