Planning a Kentucky Bourbon Trail trip comes with a lot of fun decisions: which distilleries make the list, where to eat, which bottles you’re hoping to bring home—and, of course, where to stay.

Louisville, Lexington and Bardstown all make excellent home bases for a bourbon getaway, but they offer three very different versions of Kentucky. The right choice depends on what you want your trip to feel like both during and after your time at the distilleries.

Here’s how to decide.

Louisville: For City Energy, Dining and Walkability

If you want your bourbon trip to feel like a full weekend getaway with plenty happening after the distilleries close, Louisville is hard to beat.

Kentucky’s largest city offers the widest variety of hotels, restaurants, bourbon bars, nightlife, museums and other attractions. Stay downtown, in NuLu or another centrally located neighborhood and you can easily walk from your hotel to dinner, grab a cocktail afterward or spend an evening exploring Whiskey Row.

It’s also a great choice for groups where bourbon isn’t the only thing on the agenda. Churchill Downs, museums, shopping, restaurants and entertainment give everyone plenty to do outside of a day on the Trail.

Louisville is also a particularly flexible home base if your trip includes more than one bourbon region. You may spend one day visiting Louisville distilleries and another heading farther into Bourbon Country without changing hotels.

Louisville may be the right fit if you want:
A walkable home base, lots of hotel options, a strong restaurant and nightlife scene, and plenty to do beyond bourbon.

Lexington: For Horse Country and Classic Kentucky Scenery

If your vision of Kentucky involves rolling hills, horse farms, stone fences and a little bourbon mixed in, Lexington may be exactly what you’re picturing.

Lexington and the surrounding Central Kentucky area offer a slower, more scenic feel than Louisville while still giving you plenty of restaurants, hotels and things to do.

And bourbon is only part of the appeal.

A trip to Lexington can easily include Keeneland, a horse farm tour, the Kentucky Horse Park or time exploring the city’s Distillery District. Drive just outside of town and you’ll quickly find yourself surrounded by some of the scenery Kentucky is famous for.

For visitors who want their trip to feel distinctly Kentucky from morning to night, Lexington delivers.

Historic Downtown Lexington

Lexington may be the right fit if you want:
Horse country, beautiful scenery, a relaxed pace and easy access to Central Kentucky distilleries.

Bardstown: For Full Bourbon Country Immersion

There’s a reason Bardstown is known as the Bourbon Capital of the World.

If bourbon is the main event of your trip, staying in Bardstown puts you right in the middle of some of Kentucky’s most storied bourbon country.

The town itself is smaller and more intimate than Louisville or Lexington, with a charming historic downtown, locally owned restaurants and plenty of Kentucky character. And because so many well-known distilleries are located in and around the area, it can be an especially convenient home base for a Bardstown-region tour day.

There’s something pretty great about spending the day exploring distilleries and then coming back to a small Kentucky town where bourbon still feels like part of the atmosphere.

Bardstown may be the right fit if you want:
Small-town charm, lots of bourbon history and a home base that feels completely immersed in Bourbon Country.

A Quick Note About Where You Stay and Where You Tour

Whichever home base sounds most like your kind of Kentucky, staying there doesn’t necessarily mean you have to tour that same bourbon region.

KBB offers pickup in Louisville, Lexington/Central Kentucky and Bardstown, and guests can tour outside the region where they’re staying. Since Bourbon Country covers quite a bit of ground, some combinations can involve a little more travel time than others.

If your lodging and distillery wish list span different areas, just check with your booking coordinator. They can help you figure out the smoothest plan for your day and make sure everything works well together before your itinerary is finalized.

So…Which One Should You Choose?

There really isn’t a wrong answer.

The best home base really comes down to the kind of Kentucky experience you want: city energy in Louisville, horse country and scenery in Lexington, or full Bourbon Country immersion in Bardstown.

Once you’ve picked the vibe that feels right, your KBB booking coordinator can help make sure your lodging and tour plans work well together.

Because the best Kentucky bourbon trips aren’t just about what happens inside the distilleries. Where you stay, where you eat and what you do in between are all part of the experience.

And if sorting through all of that sounds like one more tab than you want open on your browser, that’s exactly why we created KBB Reserve. Our team can help coordinate the pieces beyond your KBB tour—from where you stay and eat to the experiences that fill out the rest of your Kentucky getaway.

After all, the bourbon may bring you here. But there’s a whole lot more Kentucky worth sticking around for.
