When your business is bourbon, you’ve got to make a good old fashioned…
At KBB, we’ve spent years perfecting the art of the Old Fashioned. Our family recipe, which we fondly call Tim’s Fantastic Old Fashioned, has become a beloved staple for parties and holidays. This cocktail stands out because of its simplicity, yet the attention to detail makes all the difference!
Here’s how to make it:
Step 1: Crafting the Perfect Simple Syrup
The secret to Tim’s Fantastic Old Fashioned begins with the simple syrup. But we don’t use just any sugar — our recipe calls for Turbinado or Demerara sugar crystals, which add a richer, more complex flavor.
- Combine equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then immediately reduce the heat to a simmer for one minute.
- Set aside to cool.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can infuse your syrup with other flavors like thyme, lemon peel, or botanicals. But for the classic KBB recipe, we keep it simple to highlight the natural sweetness of the Turbinado sugar.
Step 2: Get Your Ice Ready
Fill your cocktail shaker about 2/3 full with ice. This amount provides the perfect level of chill without watering down the drink too much.
Step 3: Choose the Right Bourbon
Selecting a bourbon is key. Stay away from the extremes of the shelf — you don’t need the most expensive bottle or bottom shelf, but a good mid-range bourbon will make all the difference. Proof, grain, and aging all impact the flavor, so choose your player wisely.
Step 4: Pour the Bourbon
Measure out 2 oz. of your chosen bourbon and pour it into the cocktail shaker.
Step 5: Add the Simple Syrup
Now that your homemade syrup has cooled, add 1/2 oz. to the shaker.
Step 6: Add Bitters
Drop in 3 to 4 drops of bitters. Angostura bitters are a classic, but feel free to experiment! For example, black walnut bitters add a unique, nutty depth that’s hard to beat.
Step 7: Stir with Purpose
Stir the ingredients vigorously until the cocktail shaker begins to frost in your hand. This means your drink is perfectly chilled and well-mixed. Stirring (rather than shaking) helps break down the elements and blend them evenly, without overly diluting the cocktail.
Step 8: Strain and Pour
Strain the mixture into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Clear, large cubes are best if you want to elevate your presentation.
Step 9: The Orange Peel Trick
Take a piece of orange peel, fold it in half to release its oils, and rub it around the middle of the glass, not the rim. This way, you get a subtle hint of citrus without overwhelming the drink. Drop the peel into the glass for a final touch.
Step 10: Enjoy!
Sip, savor, and enjoy the balanced flavors of Tim’s Fantastic Old Fashioned. As you become more comfortable with the recipe, feel free to experiment with different bitters or try infusing your simple syrup to create your own twist on the family classic.
Whether you’re crafting one for yourself or sharing it with friends, Tim’s Fantastic Old Fashioned is a testament to the beauty of a well-made cocktail. Welcome to the Family – Cheers!
